Het is 1867. Een bende outlaws onder leiding van Dee Bishop, een voormalige soldaat van de Zuidelijken, doodt de rijke rancher Stoner tijdens een overval op de bank van Val Verde in Texas. De bende wordt echter gearresteerd door sheriff July Johnson. Ze worden berecht en veroordeeld tot de dood door ophanging. Dee's oudere broer en ex-soldaat van de Noordelijken Mace Bishop geeft zich uit als beul en hij ensceneert een last-minute redding van de vijf outlaws. Ze vluchten vervolgens over de Mexicaanse grens en gebruiken Maria Stoner, de attractieve weduwe van de vermoorde rancher waar Johnson verliefd op is, als gijzelaar. Complex wordt het voor de outlaws als Johnson met een posse de achtervolging inzet en ze onderling met elkaar in conflict komen.
